ABOUT
Where it all started is hard to even figure out, as the whole concept behind it really started well before it “officially” started.
A bit of previous history would detail the motions of Mile High, which was one of the most prominent production/promotions companies throughout the later 1990’s and early 2000’s. Mile High was a partnership between JT Jack Trash, Rich Best, and ESP Woody McBride. Together they produced memorable and engaging events throughout the Midwest, including large scale, multiple-headliner events in Chicago, Madison, Minneapolis, and LA. Mile High events gradually moved from larger scale events and raves towards club events, which was what was happening throughout the country during the time. As the change was taking place, personal directions and relationships were changing within the hierarchy of Mile High. Somewhere around 2003 or 2003 Mile High broke up, and 2/3 of the Mile High re-formed to create Sound In Motion.
JT and Rich Best forged an incredibly strong relationship throughout the days of the Mile High, and this friendship blossomed into Sound In Motion. The two music lovers played very different roles within Sound In Motion, but they both shared a vision of promoting electronic music and trying to get people excited and passionate about that same music that they loved.
Sound In Motion was forged upon the notion that people exposed to quality music and events could easily be drawn into the culture and support a variety of electronica events. As such, SIM has always gone out the way to provide a variety of electronica styles in a variety of different settings. SIM has always focused on presenting diversity, from large scale worldwide rock star headliners like The Chemical Brothers and Tiesto to smaller, more underground electronica artists like Lee Burridge and Dj Krush.
The first couple years of SIM focused on events at the nationally acclaimed Quest Nightclub in downtown Minneapolis. SIM started the first ever electronica focused, headliner style dance night in Minnesota with their PLUSH clubnight. PLUSH provided worldwide dj talent on a weekly basis, from the likes of Carl Cox, Frankie Bones, Armin van Buuren, and countless others. The Quest was a two-room venue, and SIM booked out the smaller Ascot Room to local promoters who would showcase other styles of music. The scene within Minneapolis changed over the course of years, with upscale ultra-bars and lounges coming into their own. The PLUSH club night had seemingly run it’s course, so SIM decided to start exploring other potential venues and scenario’s for presenting electronic music.
Sound In Motion continued pushing club nights primarily through the weekly Friday nights at Tabu Nightclub in downtown Minneapolis. This night focused on a more underground vibe, with headliners like Green Velvet, Marco Carola, Dieselboy, and others helping keep the electronica vibe alive in the twin cities. Escape Ultralounge in Minneapolis also hosted several prominent SIM events, including John Fleming, James Zabiela, and others.
Promoting 4-5 headliner events a month plus other smaller residencies gradually took a toll on the company and scene, as customers had too much to choose from. SIM slowly tapered off the number of events they were promoting, opening up the potential to put more organized efforts into promotions and marketing. A more determined focus and drive helped push the music scene in the twin cities to new levels. SIM started promoting events at Karma and Spin in downtown Minneapolis, as well as Myth, the suburban monster club. They also branched out with involvement in other states, with large scale events in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at The Rave and a couple events a year at Crush Nightclub in Des Moines, Iowa.
The SIM team gradually filtered through crew members, and over time the crew applied a wide variety of new promotions and marketing strategies. The online world’s of myspace, facebook, and other websites opened up new opportunities to promote and expose the world of electronica. Crew members like Tyler Hampton, Inno, Cities of Gold, and Nathan Vox forged forward branding a new and exciting time in the Midwest for electronica. A new world of events opened up, with artists like Benny Benassi, Armin van Buuren, Bad Boy Bill, and ATB regularly packing the largest venues in the twin cities. Theme events and crazy stage productions helped make SIM events world-class.
SIM has always tried to provide a diverse balance of music through their events. The year 2008 provides the a perfect example of how they want to push music…
