Ashleigh
Consistently inconsistent and always in motion herself, Ashleigh was born in Seoul, South Korea and adopted by a small town family in Minnesota. Morphing over the years from a country girl, club girl, raver girl, army girl, to alas… the gogo girl – Ashleigh has loved dancing to EDM since she experienced her first “DJ show” by Paul Van Dyk back in 2005. Ashleigh pursued gogo dancing from day one stepping into the scene. Her unique, soulful style, intense stage presence accompanied by an obvious passion for the music, made Ashleigh an instant fit into the SIM gogo crew. Ashleigh has danced alongside DJ’s such as Armin Van Buuren, Above and Beyond, D. Ramirez, Filo and Peri and Johnny Fiasco to name a few. These experiences have left her with a very special place in her heart for Sound in Motion which is why she returns to Minneapolis specifically to dance their shows. Los Angeles, CA is where Ashleigh calls home these days. Her life is a balance of promoting Hollywood events, being a nanny, preparing for a triathalon, learning to break dance, and a constant quest to expose her friends to ”weird, loud, (but good) techno music”.
Q&A
Q: Why did you become a Go-Go dancer?
I have always loved club dancing but never liked the ”bump and grind” with people in your personal space. I guess it was only natural that I decided to become a GoGo dancer.
Q: Where was your first gig and how did it go?
My first gig was at STARGATE with Liz. STARGATE was my favorite club at the time. I had always liked the stages for us to dance on by ourselves in front of the crowd. You might say I got a lot of practice at that club so my first gig there felt completely normal. It was a blast!
Q: Is there a science to what you/dancer’s wear?
It depends on the theme or the girl. Some girls prefer to be more covered up with ripped up shirts or tanks, and some don’t mind skimpy, cheeky booty shorts, bras and bikini tops. Boots and boot covers are a staple item for all of us. Generally we just try to color coordinate and somewhat match each other.
Q: What’s the worst experience you’ve had dancing?
One time a customer in the crowd at Epic was trying to tip me by puting it in my boot. I didn’t notice what he was doing and I accidentally kicked him in the face! (oops) On top of that I slipped on an ice cube that people were throwing at the stage from the balcony… I almost fell flat on my behind.
Q: What’s the best experience you’ve had dancing?
That’s tough! I really can’t choose between D. Ramirez at Karma or Johnny Fiasco at The Lounge. Completely different styles, but I dig that.
Q: If you could Go-Go for any DJ, who would it be?
The Chemical Brothers
Q: Any advice for aspiring Gogos?
Be confident, friendly, energetic and dependable… and you’ve got it!
Q: Where are you dancing next?
Paul Van Dyk @ Epic – Friday May 21st
